Dragon Ball fusion names: the rule, the four real ones, and 132 mashups

A fusion name is not random letter soup. It is the front half of one name glued to the back half of the other, cut on syllables — and which name supplies the front half is the only real difference between the Fusion Dance and the Potara earrings. This page states the rule, walks through the four names the anime actually settled, then applies it to 66 pairings with the cut written out so you can check every single one.

The two methods, written out

Fusion Dance

A[front] + B[tail] → Go + geta

The Metamoran dance takes the first dancer's opening syllables and the second dancer's ending. Short names can keep their whole body — Goten stays intact — which is exactly why Gotenks is not Gonks.

Potara earrings

B[front] + A[tail] → Vegi + to

Same operation, halves swapped. The on-screen explanation is about who put the earring on whom, and Toei never published a formula — so treat “swap the order” as the working rule, not scripture.

PairMethodOfficial nameThe cut
Goku + VegetaFusion DanceGogeta

Straightforward: first syllable of Goku, everything after the first syllable of Vegeta.

Go- + -geta
Vegeta + GokuPotaraVegito

Only works in Japanese: the tail comes from Kakarotto, Goku's Saiyan birth name — not from “Goku”. A generator reading English letters cannot reproduce this one.

Vegi- + -to
Goten + TrunksFusion DanceGotenks

Exception to the rule: Goten is short, so the whole name survives instead of half of it, and Trunks contributes only the tail cluster.

Goten + -ks
Caulifla + KalePotaraKefla

Halves are swapped relative to the dance: front from Kale, tail from Caulifla.

Ke- + -fla

66 pairings, both directions

Produced by the rule above — not studio canon, except the ★ rows. The cut is printed next to every name so you can see exactly what was glued to what.

Where the rule stops working (and why we say so)

  • Gotenks keeps all of Goten. Any mechanical “take half” rule produces Gonks instead. We hard-code the official names rather than fake a rule that fits them.
  • Vegito is unreproducible from English spelling alone — the tail has to come from Kakarotto. If a generator hands you “Vegoku”, it is working from letters.
  • Single-vowel names (Cell, Buu, Whis) have no interior syllable boundary to cut at, so results there are lumpy by construction. The table marks nothing as better than it is.
  • Pronounceability beats symmetry. Every generator that only halves strings outputs “Goketa”, and that is the entire reason this page shows the cut instead of just the answer.

Questions people actually search

What is Goku and Vegeta's fusion name?
Two of them. The Fusion Dance gives Gogeta (Go- from Goku plus -geta from Vegeta); the Potara earrings give Vegito (Vegi- from Vegeta plus -to from Kakarotto, Goku's Saiyan birth name). They are different characters with different designs, not regional spellings of one name.
How are Dragon Ball fusion names actually made?
Take the front half of one name and the back half of the other, cutting on syllable boundaries rather than raw letters. Which name supplies the front half is what separates the two methods: Fusion Dance reads A-then-B, Potara is written B-then-A. Toriyama and Toei never published a formula, so the official names are hand-tuned for pronounceability — this page's job is to show the cut, not to pretend it is canon.
Why isn't it just “Goeta” or “Vegu”?
Because a letter-percentage split ignores syllables. Halving “Goku” and “Vegeta” by character count gives Go + eta = “Goeta”, which throws away the ‘t’ onset that makes the name land. Cutting on syllable boundaries gives Go + geta, which is the actual name. Any generator that prints Goeta-style output is splitting letters, not sounds.
Does the order of the two names matter?
Yes, and that is the whole difference between the methods. Goku + Vegeta as a dance is Gogeta; the same pair with the halves swapped is Vegito-ish. Our table shows both directions for all 66 pairings so you can pick the one that sounds right.
Are these names official?
Only the four marked ★ come from the anime and films. Everything else in the table is produced by the rule described above, so you can use it for fan art, RPG teams or OC names without stepping on a published character.
