Five ways to fuse, and what each one costs

"Fusion" in Dragon Ball is not one mechanic. There is a dance, an earring, and three kinds of absorption, and they behave completely differently: two of them make a new person (and therefore a new name), three of them leave one fighter in charge with a bigger battery. Deciding which one you mean is the whole job before you generate anything — it decides the outfit, the silhouette and whether the result should look like two heroes or one victim.

The five methods

Fusion Dance

makes a fused name
Who
Metamoran technique, taught to Goten and Trunks on Earth
How
Mirror-image pose, fingers almost touching, the call said in rhythm
What it costs
Two bodies become one new person
Limit
Half an hour on screen; pushed forms end it early
Failure mode
Mismatched height or power gives a weak, unstable result

Potara earrings

makes a fused name
Who
Kai equipment, one earring per participant
How
Each side wears one of a matched pair
What it costs
Both designs and both egos merge into one body
Limit
Presented as permanent for Kais; Dragon Ball Super gave mortals a time limit
Failure mode
A mismatched pair produces a limp, short fusion instead

Namekian merger

no new name
Who
Namekians only — Nail into Piccolo, later Gohan into Piccolo
How
One Namekian absorbs a willing (or taken) other
What it costs
The absorber keeps their own identity and gains the other's power and knowledge
Limit
No clock; separation is possible
Failure mode
Nothing to get wrong — the asymmetry is the point

Energy absorption (androids)

no new name
Who
Cell against Androids 17 and 18
How
The tail makes contact and drains the target's bio-energy
What it costs
The absorbed are left withered; the absorber completes a designed form
Limit
Effectively permanent
Failure mode
Partial absorption gives an incomplete, regenerating form

Buu absorption

no new name
Who
Majin Buu's stretching body
How
The victim is enveloped and becomes part of the mass
What it costs
Gains power plus the absorbed person's traits and sometimes their appearance
Limit
No clock, but the absorbed stay conscious inside
Failure mode
Extracting them reverses it — and can split the absorber into weaker forms

Deliberately no power numbers. Any page that hands you a stat table for fusion is quoting fan arithmetic, not the series — and a generator can't act on a number the story never gave.

Choosing, in order

  1. Mutual or one-way? Two heroes deciding to combine → Dance or Potara. One character taking another → absorption, and then the picture should be asymmetric on purpose.
  2. Can your pair physically match? The Dance needs comparable bodies. A huge size gap is a reason to use the earrings, or to make the failed version the joke.
  3. Outfit language. Vest and sash for the Dance, earrings and mixed gi for Potara — that is literally what the two style buttons change.
  4. Form and mood last. God, Ultra Instinct, SSJ4 and Villainous recolour and reshape; pick one, not several.
  5. Then name it — only the two mutual methods produce a fused name, which is why the naming rule lives on its own page.

Questions this saves you

Which fusion is the strongest?
The story never ranks them on a scale. What it does establish: the mutual methods (Dance, Potara) produce a fighter above either part, while the one-way absorptions raise the absorber to whatever the meal was worth. The Dance is the fragile one — it needs matching bodies. Potara skips that requirement, which is why it is the escalation button in the plot.
Why do only two of these create a fused name?
Because only those two make a new person. A merger or an absorption leaves one subject in charge, so there is nothing to rename. If you want the syllable rule for names, it is on the fusion-names page; it applies to the Dance and the earrings only.
Is a fusion just two designs pasted together?
No — and this is the single most useful thing to know before generating. The fused character is one body carrying selected traits: hair from one side, clothing language from the other, one shared face. Prompts and style choices that describe a costume swap instead of a blend are the reason most fusion images look like bad editting.
How does this page map onto the generator?
Pick a method first, then a style. Dance and Potara decide the outfit language; the six styles decide form and mood (God, Ultra Instinct, SSJ4, Villainous) or earring-versus-vest silhouette. The absorption routes have no style button — for those, generate the absorber and lean on the pairing itself.
